What is a specialized private school declared in the public interest?

Specialized: the services are targeted for a specific clientele (see the admission criteria in FAQ)

Private: is a private, non-profit school with adapted services, recognized in the public interest and accredited for purposes of subsidies by the Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sport of Quebec, the school is a non-profit corporation and has its own Board of Directors.

Public interest: at the request of the Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sports, we are a complementary service to school boards. A school board may call on our services in two circumstances: to offer a service that cannot be offered within the board; to address a specific (or severe) disability of a child who corresponds with the profile of Giant Steps' students.

It is the responsibility of the School Board to evaluate the need for an extra-territorial agreement with Giant Steps School for a child.

What are the fees?

Giant Steps is a private school that is subsidized by the ministère de l’Enseignement et de l’Éducation supérieure. This funding allows us to provide services at a cost that is comparable to the public sector.

  • Registration fee: $200 (annually)
  • Other fees: lunchtime supervision ($720), school materials ($175) and Parents’ Committee fees ($60).
  • Other school materials

School transportation

Giant Steps does not have its own transportation service. Transportation is provided by:

  • the student's school board of origin, if there is a school board agreement for the child's enrollment at Giant Steps.  Please note that the school board has no obligation to provide transportation, even if there is an agreement for the student's enrollment at our school;
  • the parent;
  • private transportation (paid by parents);
  • public transportation.

Our suggestions for parents regarding a school board agreement (entente):

The Ministère de l'Éducation de l'Enseignement supérieur stipulates that files with school board agreements must be prioritized by Giant Steps School.

To determine if your school board will sign an entente for your child, we suggest that you meet with the professionals at your child's school (teacher, principal, specialized resources...) or at the school board to review your child's profile, strengths and needs.  An agreement between Giant Steps and a school board mus be agree upon by all parties (school board, parents and Giant Steps).
