Our Impact

Transforming Lives and Communities

At Giant Steps, impact begins with each autistic person—their strengths, aspirations, choices and right to live a dignified, active and meaningful life.

For more than four decades, Giant Steps has developed specialized programs, practical resources and collaborative initiatives that support autistic individuals and their families while helping build more knowledgeable, accessible and neuroinclusive communities.

The organization’s impact reaches far beyond those who learn, work and receive services at the Giant Steps Centre. Through training, research, partnerships and community-based initiatives, Giant Steps helps transform schools, workplaces, public spaces and essential services.

Impact Across Four Pillars

Learning, Growth and Belonging

The Giant Steps School supports autistic students between the ages of 4 and 21 in developing academic, communication, social, life and employment-readiness skills.

Individualized teaching and therapeutic support help each student build confidence, strengthen autonomy and participate more fully in school and community life. When appropriate, the inclusion program also supports students as they gradually transition into neighbourhood schools

Pathways to Adulthood and Neuroinclusive Employment

Giant Steps’ Adult Education and employment services support autistic adults in pursuing lives shaped by choice, purpose and belonging.

Through continued learning, social-enterprise activities, community participation, workplace preparation and individualized employment support, participants develop practical skills, build confidence and explore meaningful pathways toward greater independence.

The organization’s employment impact extends far beyond the participants it directly supports. Giant Steps works with employers, industry partners and community organizations to promote neuroinclusive employment, improve recruitment and onboarding practices, develop workplace accommodations and build the capacity of teams to support neurodivergent employees. Through training, consultation, job coaching and collaborative employment initiatives, Giant Steps helps remove systemic barriers and create workplaces where neurodivergent people can contribute, belong and succeed.

Research That Leads to Action

The Giant Steps Research and Innovation Hub, in collaboration with the Transforming Autism Care Consortium (TACC), connects researchers, practitioners, autistic individuals, families and community partners to address real-world priorities.

As a Community Living Lab, the Hub supports collaborative research, tests promising approaches and shares knowledge in practical and accessible ways. This ensures that research is informed by lived experience and translated into solutions that can improve everyday life.

Building More Neuroinclusive Communities

Through its Resource and Training Centre, Giant Steps shares its expertise with organizations across multiple sectors.

Training, consultations, accessibility assessments and collaborative projects help educators, employers, cultural institutions, public services and first responders better understand and respond to the diverse needs of autistic and neurodivergent people. Each partnership contributes to environments where more people can participate with confidence, dignity and a genuine sense of belonging.

From Individual Progress to Lasting Change

Giant Steps’ impact can be seen in every new skill learned, every barrier removed and every door opened:

  • Students gaining confidence, autonomy and greater opportunities for inclusion.
  • Adults developing meaningful roles in workplaces and their communities.
  • Families accessing knowledge, guidance and stronger networks of support.
  • Employers recognizing talent and adopting more inclusive practices.
  • Researchers working alongside the community to address shared priorities.
  • Public spaces and essential services becoming more accessible and responsive.
  • Communities moving from awareness to meaningful neuroinclusion.

Measuring What Matters

Giant Steps’ success is not defined by numbers alone. Impact is measured through improved quality of life, greater autonomy, meaningful participation, sustainable employment, stronger communities and opportunities for autistic individuals to make choices about their own futures.

By connecting education, adult services, research, training and community action, Giant Steps creates change that extends across a lifetime and continues well beyond the organization’s walls.

Help Expand Giant Steps’ Impact

Every partnership, donation and shared commitment helps open new possibilities for autistic individuals and contributes to a more inclusive society.

With the support of its community, Giant Steps can continue building a society where every person is recognized, supported and empowered to thrive.
