Autism: Strategies for Bus Drivers
Released in 2018, Autism: Strategies for Bus Drivers is a bilingual training resource developed by Giant Steps in collaboration with La Capitale – rayonneDON. The initiative was designed to help school bus drivers and transportation teams better understand and support autistic students during their daily journeys.
Travelling by school bus can involve noise, close proximity to others, unexpected changes and transitions that may be challenging for some autistic students. Through a training video and practical guide, the resource provides strategies for communicating clearly, establishing predictable routines, recognizing sensory or emotional distress and responding calmly and respectfully.
By giving drivers practical and accessible tools, the initiative helps create safer, calmer and more predictable transportation experiences. It also highlights the important role school bus drivers play in supporting students’ well-being, confidence and successful participation in school.
