Xenia – Opening Doors in Hospitality
Xenia Phase 1 was a pan-Canadian neuroinclusive employment initiative led by Giant Steps in partnership with Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Strategy. The initiative supported autistic youth and young adults between the ages of 15 and 30 in exploring hospitality careers, gaining paid workplace experience and developing greater confidence and independence.
Across eight Fairmont hotels in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, participants took part in paid, hands-on workplace experiences of up to 50 hours, tailored to their interests, skills and support needs. Individualized matching, job coaching, mentorship and ongoing support helped prepare participants for success, while Fairmont teams received guidance and training to strengthen neuroinclusive recruitment, onboarding and workplace practices.
Nearly 45 autistic youth and young adults participated in Xenia programming. Thirty-three completed paid workplace placements, while 10 joined the Saturday Hospitality and Employment Discovery Program, which offered a more gradual introduction to hospitality for participants who needed additional preparation before entering the labour market.
Participants developed skills, confidence, friendships and a strong sense of belonging. Several placements contributed to new employment opportunities, while participating hotels gained a deeper understanding of autistic talent and the practical changes that can make workplaces more inclusive.
